Rap Battle Profile :John John Da Don

John John Da Don once had dreams of making it as a professional basketball player, but he eventually realized that his main passion for performing was the route to go. John John took his love for music and transferred that into a career in battle rap where the 24-year-old rhymer has flourished as one of the top stars in the game.

After grinding his way through 106 & Park ’s “Freestyle Friday” competition and URL’s “Proving Grounds”, John John reached the big stage in 2012 when he faced off against Hitman Holla at Summer Madness 2 . Since then, JJDD has faced off against the culture’s best including The Saurus, Cortez, Charlie Clips, K-Shine, and Aye Verb.
One emcee he has yet to cross paths with in the ring is longtime rival Hollow Da Don.
According to John John, he’s ready to take on Hollow in an “I Quit Match,” so that there can only be one “Da Don” in battle rap.

Hometown

I’m originally from Yonkers, New York. I was born there and stayed there until 2005. Then I came to the north side of Atlanta.

Years Experience

Battle rapping in its new format, I’ve been doing since between 08-09. As far as battling period like on the street, I’ve been doing that as long as I’ve been rapping. I’ve always been competing. On camera, my first battle was around ‘08 or ‘09.

Style Known For (ie aggression, wordplay, punchlines, freestyle)

I got one of the best overall styles, because I do the set-ups, the storytelling, the personals, the jokes. I’m known for bars. I’m also known for taking another n***a’s s**t and flipping it against them – killing my opponents with their own style. But mainly bars.

Crew

S.W.A.G. Inc, those are my brothers. We call it a fraternity. We don’t call it a crew or clique. S.W.A.G. Inc is an acronym for a lot of things – “Stuntin With A lot of Guap”, “Speak Wise Amongst Geniuses,” “Sleeping With A lot of Girls” [laughs].

Slogan

My main slogan is “Please don’t say the John if you ain’t saying it twice. And if you don’t add the Da Don you ain’t saying it right.” It’s about branding. You want them to know your name. Don’t ever f**k my name up.

Leagues Competed In

URL, King of the Dot, Gladiator School with Snoop for the BET Hip Hop Awards, MC War, Grind Time, Strictly Bars, 7 Cities Shark

Mixtapes/Albums

Shruglife , AppreciHATED, Shrug or Die Vol 1. Recently, I just dropped Once Upon A Don. You can get all of them on Johnjohndadon com .

Favorite Battle (Participant)

If I had to pick one, I’m going to say the battle with Hitman Holla, because that’s the biggest one. That’s the fourth most viewed battle on URL.

One Mainstream Rapper You’d Like To Battle

I don’t think any of them are competition as far as battle rap. Give me Eminem. He’s a battle god in everybody’s eyes.
Name One Battler You Think Could Possibly Beat You On Their Absolute A Game
Someone who’s on their “A Game” I feel like is a problem is T-Rex.

Artists You’ve Worked With Musically

Jadakiss, Migos, Boosie, Problem, Bow Wow, Sonny Digital, Honorable C.N.O.T.E.

Your Battle Rap Hit List

Hollow Da Don, that’s it. He’s been running for so long people don’t really want to see that battle like they used to, but I still want to kick his ass. I don’t care what anybody wants to see. I want to kick his ass. It’s been too much s**t talking. It’s been too much comparing. I want to kick his ass.It would be stupid if we battled for the [Da Don] name, because who are we to really claim that name. But what I would be willing to do is whoever loses that battle can’t battle no more, so there can only be one “Da Don” battling. You can go on and do whatever else it is you wanna do. It can only be one [in battle rap]. We can do that. Get the paperwork.

Top 5 Emcees DOA

No order – Hov, Kiss, Biggie, Pun, Drake

Do You Prefer To Participate In A Debatable Battle Or A Clear Victory?

I like to fight. I don’t want anything easy. I love debatable battles where you can go back and keep watching it. Those battles are timeless. When you watch them again, you don’t know who’s gonna win all over again.
With a clear body bag, when you go watch it again you know what you’re going to watch it for. You know this n***a is about to kill this n****a. So I’d rather a debatable classic all day, every day.

Where Do You See Battle Rap Going In The Future?

I see battle rap getting as big as wrestling and MMA did. I see it going that route like really being a sport. I feel like it’s gonna be so big of a sport it’s almost not going to be that much Hip Hop anymore. It’s either gonna be a sport or just entertaining like a show. It’s going to get real, real big. It’s gonna outgrow Hip Hop.

Top 10 Stunts Performed By Hip-Hop Artists

One of the downsides to being a famous figure is that what is done after becoming an established entity is not just judged by others in the field, but also the entire court of public opinion. And because Hip-Hop is such a trendsetting part of culture, many people in it are not immune to the aforementioned drawback.
Therefore, here are 10 strange things that rap figures have done after stepping into the spotlight. In some cases, the light dimmed down because of their activities. And in others, it just got brighter.

10). Canibus Performs in Silver Body Paint at the 1998 VMAs: Canibus was once poised to be “the next great emcee” after a legendary battle with LL Cool J. But a series of missteps prevented that from happening. Here is one of the biggest ones…

9). M.O.P. and L.F.O. Collaborate on a Song: M.O.P. is one of Hip-Hop’s most beloved underground acts, and so when Billy Danze and Lil’ Fame collaborated with boy-band L.F.O., it was strange to say the least. Their song, “Life is Good,” fell flat. And while the positive message can’t be faulted, the execution just sounded painfully contrived. It’s difficult for people that are “stuck on the streets like car tires” to identify with people who name-check New Kids on the Block. This song was the perfect example of a failed attempt to do so.

8). Gucci Mane Changes His Name to “Guwop” and then Back to Gucci Mane Almost Right Away: Gucci has had a few instances of strange behavior: the ice cream face tattoo, driving on the wrong side of the road, etc.  One of the most memorable for him though is when he changed his name to “Guwop.”
After an overwhelming backlash for the decision, Guwop was Gucci Mane again that same morning.

7). Kanye West Wears a Skirt at 12-12-12 Concert: At a televised show to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy, Mr. West took the stage wearing a black leather Givenchy skirt atop tight leather pants. Because the broadcast reached a reported 2 billion people and Kanye’s fashion choice was so unique, it faced even more criticism than some of the commentary he has provided over the years.

6). 50 Cent Pens an Anti-Bullying Book: Considering that 50 Cent introduced himself to the music industry via “How to Rob” and has seen more beef than a butcher in his career, it was very interesting in 2011 when he wrote a book speaking out against bullying.  And to his credit, he even took it a step further and used the book as an opportunity to evaluate how the problem starts. “Playground” tells the story from the bully’s perspective and attempts to explore where the cycle of abuse begins. “The actual character, Butterball, he’s dealing with multiple issues,” 50 explained to the press. “He’s dealing with weight issues: He’s overweight, and you know how common childhood obesity is right now.”

5). Big Daddy Kane Poses for Playgirl : Big Daddy Kane projected an image of being a ladies’ man on many occasions, from the cover of his first two albums to his appearance in Madonna’s infamous Sex book with her and Naomi Campbell. When Kane appeared in Playgirl though, it was particularly strange because homosexual men check for that magazine just as much (if not more so) than heterosexual women.

4). Warren G Endorses Male Enhancement Pill: During April of 2011, Warren G appeared in infomercials for AffirmXL- a penis enlargement pill.  In a statement to this site at the time of them hitting the airwaves, he said, ““I am the original Regulator; I don’t need nothing, but I believe in Affirm XL.”

3). DJ Khaled Proposes to Nicki Minaj: Months before the release of his album, Suffering from Success, in 2013, DJ Khaled asked Nicki Minaj to marry him during a segment on MTV News with a $500,000 ring. Minaj later dismissed in a radio interview: “Khaled is my brother and Khaled was not serious with that damn proposal, y’all.”  However, Khaled told US Weekly, “I was serious.  She can take her time and think about it. At least she knows how I feel now.” Either way, it was very memorable and that’s saying a lot in today’s extravagant and flashy mainstream Hip-Hop landscape.

2). Eazy-E Has Lunch with President George H.W. Bush: In the spring of 1991, The L.A. Times ran a story about how Eazy had been invited to the White House for a luncheon in which the then-sitting
President of the United States of America, George H.W. Bush was going to be in attendance. The hardcore Hip-Hop pioneer accepted which resulted in right-wing conservatives and people who knew the lyrics to “Boyz-n-the-Hood” by heart being equally confused. In his memoir, Ruthless,
N.W.A’s manager Jerry Heller recalled Eazy’s time at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: “Nobody’s been that stoned in the White House since Gerald Ford’s kid Jack smoked dope on the White House roof.”

1). Daylyt Attempts to Take a Dump on Stage: When he wasn’t getting a positive response from the crowd during a battle, rapper Daylyt decided to literally try and s**t on the competition. “If I hear two more boos, I’m going to take a boo-boo on stage.” He did, and so he tried. But before he could finish, security escorted him out.

Bill O’Reilly Blames Rap Music For The Decline Of Christianity In America

It is pretty well documented that Bill O’Reilly is not a fan of Hip Hop. The Fox News host has taken aim at Cam’ron, Ludacris, Common, and others in the past. O’Reilly is now once again pointing the finger at the culture. This time he is blaming rap music for the fall of Christianity in the United States

A Pew Research survey reveals the number of Americans that do not identify themselves with a religion rose from 16.1% to 22.8% in the last seven years. The largest group to claim to be “unaffiliated” is the Millennial generation. Self-identified Christians dropped around 8 percent – 78.4% to 70.6%. O’Reilly claims Hip Hop is part of the reason citizens under the age of 40 are turning away from organized religion.

“There is no question that people of faith are being marginalized by a secular media and pernicious entertainment,” said O’Reilly on his The O’Reilly Factor program. “The rap industry, for example, often glorifies depraved behavior. That sinks into the minds of some young people – the group that is most likely to reject religion.”

Drake Contemplates battling Muda Mook

The “will they” or “won’t they” talk about the potential battle between Drake and Murda Mook has been ongoing for months. The news broke last August when Mook posted pictures of Drake supposedly issuing the challenge. Since that time Mook has called out Drizzy at the BET Hip Hop Awards and in a verse over the “6 God” beat. Mook even claimed he wanted $15 million to set-up the match

The two met face-to-face again at King Of The Dot’s “Blackout 5″ event where an impromptu battle almost broke out. At URL’s recent “Nome 5″ showcase, Drake was asked in front of Mook again about the highly anticipated face-off.
“You gotta beat [Tsu] Surf first before you come see me,” Drake told Mook about possibly battling in the future.

URL host Smack then asked the OVO boss if he would finally take on Mook if the Dot Mobb leader defeats Surf at the upcoming “Summer Madness 5″ event. Drake replied, “We can negotiate. We can talk about it.”

“I feel like we go can right now though,” responded Mook. “I will murder this n*gga if he ever wants to get on this stage. He knows that.”

South Africa’s Illest Wordsmith Setting new bars & levels Exclusive Interview : R-Senic

Who is R Senic?

R-senic was born Theodore Nyiko Moyane in Soweto and relocated to Tembisa a very young age. I am a rapper/song writer with a deep love for music and art.

When did you know you wanted to rap?

In 1999 just before I went to high school

So what Style of Music influenced your taste of Music today?

All kinds of music really…I draw my energy from all genres but it all started with the jazz music I heard from my dad.
.

Who’s To blame for music not landing on People’s Hands?

From my experience it’s always a financial challenges and the lack of resources such as distribution deals etc…Hard copies are difficult to get to the masses on a large scale.

What’s your take on hip hop’s fall out? You know; the one-hit-wonders of hip-hop…what does it take to sustain the music?

Just be true to yourself, doing you is the hardest thing to lose.

What was the First Hip-hop Album you owned?

Nas – It was written

.NWA or A Tribe Called Quest?

A Tribe Called Quest

Your track “Ask Me for More” is a well compiled joint, what’s the song about?

It’s about my come-back to the game after a long silent spell. My Fans wanted more music from me and so I came back to give them more

When you said “I honour Rap, you’re here to do a bling thing” who are you referring to?

I’m referring to all rappers that think they need gimmicks to get their message across.

You’re a very versatile MC, the most Underrated lyricist…how do you craft your versatility abilities without your flow being affected?

It’s a skill that one can’t learn or be taught really…I just never stopped writing and with time it became second nature. I can’t explain it

What Does Street Cred Really Mean? Is it as essential as it was in the 90s?

Not much in this day and age… our generation of emcees had to pay dues at cyphers and shows before getting the necessary recognition and now it’s all about who you know

Underground Emcees possess most of the crucial hip-hop elements but not in terms of making money. What good is street cred when it’s not feeding you?

Not much I guess but I believe that if I make music from the heart soon enough people will realise my worth

How as the journey in cooking up The I.R Tape project?

Whom have you worked with on it? Actually the I.R Tape is tracks that did not make it on my upcoming Album that i’m completing with Casper (sgiunit). We also worked with Paragon and Thando Msiza

Mpumalanga’s Rising Artists (The Hustler’s FootSteps) Exclusive Interview with Skinny T

We had the privilege of exploring & getting to know one of Mpumalanga’s most talented MCees, with great motivation aiming at greater heights beyond music….MEET SKINNY T.

For those who don’t know,Who Is Skinny T?

Real name Thabo Tevin Mndawe born at Sandriver (Hazyview) in Mpumalanga, attended my high school at Sibuko Setfu Secondary school after matric went Witbank College now know as Nkangala FET College there I did Electrical Engineering. I’m currently based in Joburg working in the film industry still pushing my music, networking trying to spread my wings.

How did you realize your potential to be an MC?

Growing up I was so interested to anything that involved art from sketching, painting, writing, I remember producing my first stage play at an age of 13.

My mom Nester Hessi Ndlala may her soul rest in peace, she use to buy me 100% RNB cassettes only old Geez can remember those, Side A was RNB and Side B Rap Thabo was more interested to side B. I knew i wanted to be a writer but at that point i didn’t even know where to start, i then notice one thing in common about Rap songs that was rhyming skeem.

I saved up and went to record a demo with Cybernator, everyone i made listen to it gave me props, i started attending Cyphers to pefect my skill met up with Kooben Monsumy we then started a company called Executive World Wide Entertainment, Record an album title ”Still Climbing” that was in 2010 it manage to reach the music stores, got air-play country wide, my first single ”Shaker” even got the number one spot on music lounge a music show on SABC 1, Second single ”Mzansi” was playing on the Telkom Charity Cup advert

What did your family & friends have to say about that?

As i was raised by a single parent she died believing one day i will make it in this music, because she was the one use to give me money to attend Hip Hop gigs and demo recording, as for my dad i will never know because I only met him on the day of his funeral. My sister and grandmother they say they will start understanding when it starts putting food on the table even after the achievements I obtained, but its all good because at the end of the day its my dream not theirs and in a way its motivating it makes me to push more to prove them wrong.

Describe your style , what makes it unique & fresh?….the track FRIDAY has new sound elements to it, what’s your transition?

I’m an artist before a rapper and the fact that I listen to all types of music jazz, soul, reggae etc
I’m so blessed to working with such an amazing vessital producer Sthembiso Twala from Natives Rhythms we always try to fuse all the differents elements but still try remain loyal to the genre Hip Hop
The are dope tyt tracks but ” Friday” its a beautiful joint.

What was the First Hiphop Album you Owned?

I remember I have saved money for a Levis jean went to town before I would go to any store I started at music store listened to some few record, not sure if I made mistake or that was what was meant to be. With all the money I brought Eminem- Marshal Mathers LP and DMX- And Then There Was X

Was there a specific Artist or Album that inspired you to start a career in the music game?

After listening to all the guys whom were pushing hard back in those days i’ll definitely  say H20- Amanzimtoti and PRO Kid- Heads and Tails those albums made me understand beauty of the genre unlike other genres you can only talk about one thing, Hip Hop allows to talk about anything and everything love, social issues and it motives.

What is it that up-coming artists need to know/understand about the evolution of an artist in order to prolong their music in the industry?

* Make sure you bringing something fresh, something which is not already there, so you won’t feel like you competing with someone

* Understand even popcorns in the same pot wont pop at the sametime, stay humble and working as you waiting for your time

* Like myself I had a chance to work with any artist of my choice for my next project I let it pass cos I felt I still need to improve my skills, still need to build this Skinny T brand. Sometimes short cuts don’t work

* Pray hard

Back to the Song FRIDAY; what’s the song really about, what does it entail?

”Friday” is the first single for my next project this joint is for all the hard working people out there, you can be on the nine to five or pushing any other hussel ”Friday” the day we get to reward our hard working bodies and minds (We Turn Up)

What are Skinny T’s future plans?, where do you picture seeing yourself in 5 to 10 years?

For now I’m planning on dropping three singles with music videos before I can drop the full length, also planning on having my own stable so I can give platform to up-coming artist specific from Mpumalanga who are struggling just like I did coz quite frankly I’m doing it for them too

list Of Musicians That Suck on Their Own Songs but Flourish on Songs they are Featured on

It seems that lately you can’t make it
into the South African music scene
without being featured on a bigger
artists song. Even after you feature
your solo career just doesn’t seem to
build the right momentum, you find
South African musicians performing
better on features than they ever will
on their own single releases. That’s not good at all if I have to say so myself.

How do you expect to make money
from your solo career if you only
flourish when being featured and not
when making your own music?

We’ve compiled a list of South African
Musicians That Suck on Their Own
Songs but Flourish on Other People’s
Songs it just doesn’t make sense!
Most of these musicians are musicians
that were a part of a group or band
before deciding to venture off into their solo careers, it makes you wonder is it really all worth it in the end?

Speedy

Bongo Maffin case #1 honestly I don’t
know why they split on each other
man. Speedy honestly since your Bongo
Maffin days the only hits we’ve seen
from your solo career are those where
you were a featured artist. The biggest
hit being Lento followed by Ungowami
by Uhuru ..his solo work hasn’t been that great.

DA LES

aka “Mr Let The Champagne Out The Cage” Uhm, the “North Kid” does know how
to throw awesome All White Parties in
his mamma’s backyard. No offense LES but you really do sound better when featured then when you’re out there doing your own thing. All Eyez On Me
was great, Kontrol freaken awesome too but both are songs you were featured in. No beef though but some nice Da Les hits will be pretty cool!

Ma-E

Ma-E apparently uGogo is a hit
for some but lyrically poor for most of
us. Great job on Sgelekeqe, great job
on Steve Kekana Remix on many other joints. See if you had verse’s like that on your own songs Cash Time would be probably be bigger and making more money than what just K.O brings in, hehe #justsaying.

Stoan

Ever since Bongo Maffin it seems
Stoan’s solo career didn’t fully launch
but he’s collaborating one did. He’s
probably made more money off
collaborating than he has on his own.
Everyone for a Bongo Maffin reunion
say “I!” Speedy and Stoan even tried
something together and it didn’t work.

JR

The last time JR flourished was when
he was making the circle bigger
actually but, JR it’s been almost what 5 years or more? but goodness me JR did some pretty cool work on All eyez on me (we all love that verse) even his chorus on Trust It got me thinking ..
boy could be the chorus go to guy in
SA.. In summary .. It’s time to faasa in
your own songs and make them bigger than the songs you’re invited to be featured in.

Maggz

HEAVEN, great job. Amantombazane
Remix , Steve Kekana Remix , Heaven.
Truth or dare
, great job. Are you starting to see where the problem is? All of the above mentioned are features and not your own song Maggz, we honestly have faith in you but when you deliver more on features than your own singles we not so sure what we should look out for from your album mate.

Smashis

Another member of the Cash Time fam
all hit features no hit singles. No one is
calling you a bad artist here but for K.O to not be called the King of Cash Time every single person on Cash Time needs to be performing accordingly. We really think 2015 is your year to flourish, now go out there and be great!

Ziyon

When the news of LiquiDeep splitting
up came out we all knew that it was a
recipe for a young disaster or more,
since the split of LiquiDeep Ziyon’s “solo career” has not been so great.. People actually remember his features than his own singles..You know the controversial Tumi ft Ziyon & Reason- In Defense of My Art and Your Love by Kent …Any of the above mentioned belong to Ziyon? No! and to be honest Liquideep sounds amazing as a group.
This solo nton nton ehh ! I think it’s
time to have a reunion gents.

Naak Musiq

The numbers don’t lie, wasn’t Call Out
almost song of the year last year? That tells you what kind of potential Naak has stored in his little voice box but he just needs to let it out in his own music. Heavy K-Yini ft Naak music was also a big deal at some point the only problem is that he’s a feature and not all the royalties go to him. Anyway keep doing what you’re doing Naak maybe soon an album will come from it and we can hear what you’ve really got for us.

Samthing Soweto

Samkelo was just amazing as a
member of The Soil and honestly he
should get back with the group. Sam is
extremely talented but outside The Soil ..his solo career has not been looking too great. I mean remember “I’m lonely” and that Sunday live version they did on that Cafe what-what show on SABC something .. That was boss my people . Get with the crew Sam

HHP Addresses the SAMA XXI Hosting & why it never went as Expected.

Rapper HHP has accepted the criticism
about his job as host of the SAMAs, but he’s also defended himself, saying the script was changed at the last minute.

HHP came under fire as Twitter critics
voiced their disappointment with how
he hosted the biggest music award
event in the country.

The rapper, however, decided to look
at the positive things that came out of
his Samas experience, and shared
them in a lengthy message on
Facebook, in which he also admits that
he should “take public speaking
lessons”
and should “grow a thicker
skin and try my luck at stand up”.

He has also defended himself, though,
saying that he was caught off-guard by sudden changes made to his script. Speaking to Daily Sun, HHP said the online criticism did not take him by surprise, and that he did the best he could under the circumstances. “I won’t lie, I had fun hosting the awards. I was definitely expecting some naysayers,” HPP admitted.

“I had to appeal to people from
different backgrounds, but I took the
bull by the horns and did it. In my 15
years in this industry, I have learned
that negative feedback and haters are
not a liability, but a commodity. I need
that feedback. I think I appreciate it
more than anything.”
HHP, whose real name is Jabulani
Tsambo
, further explained that there were several technical difficulties which made his job more difficult, on top of unexpected changes.

“I got my script on Thursday and I am
one of those people who cram things,
so I was a bit lost when the script was
changed,”
he told the publication.
